About
More than 50 years after its humble grand opening, The North Face delivers an extensive line of performance apparel, equipment, and footwear. The North Face began in San Francisco’s North Beach neighbourhood in 1966. Through the 1960s, The North Face brand cherished a following amongst avid outdoor athletes and began sponsoring expeditions to some of the most far-flung, still largely untouched corners of the globe. This launched a proud tradition which continues in full force today and constantly reinforces The North Face mantra, Never Stop Exploring™. The North Face’s fundamental mission remains unchanged since 1966: Provide the best gear for their athletes and the modern day explorer, support the preservation of the outdoors, and inspire a global movement of exploration.
Sustainability Efforts
The North Face has set an ambitious goal to ensure all products they make are made with recycled, regenerative, organic or responsibly-sourced renewable fabrics—which are fabrics derived from materials that will replenish over the course of a lifetime. They’re on track to hit this goal with all our apparel in 2025, and all footwear and equipment by 2030.
Another goal set by the company is to eliminate single-use plastic packaging by 2025. In the meantime, they’re working to reduce remaining product packaging, and design packaging that is more recyclable. The North Face only use recycled content and/or third-party certified content (such as Forest Stewardship Council certification) for all paper materials, like product hangtags and cardboard shipping boxes.
Additionally, The North Face has committed to improving animal welfare and traceability in their goose down and feather supply chain. In 2014 they launched the Responsible Down Standard (RDS) in partnership with Textile Exchange - a global non-for-profit dedicated to sustainability in the apparel and textile industry, and Control Union Certifications, an accredited third-party certification body with expertise in agriculture and farm systems. The RDS ensures that that The North Face down does not come from animals that have been subjected to any unnecessary harm, such as force-feeding or live-plucking, provides traceability in their supply chain, and helps validate and track the down used.
