About

Afends Official is an alternative Byron Bay clothing & fashion brand leading the way in organic hemp fashion and men’s & women's streetwear. Born in 2006 in the small coastal town of Byron Bay, Australia, Afends was founded by Declan Wise and Jonathan Salfield off the back of a small screen printing business they originally created to print band merchandise for punk and hardcore bands. With the added culture of surf and skate injected into the punk and hardcore movement of the 2000s, the Afends ethos and style evolved.

Sustainability Efforts

In January 2021, Afends released their first 100% eco-friendly range.

In 2015, Afends created their first range of Hemp Clothing. The Afends Hemp Revolution is the company’s way of promoting sustainability to their consumers as well as the surf and fashion industries. As a renewable resource, hemp takes as little as 90 days to cultivate, requires significantly less water than cotton, and produces significantly more fibre per acre. It supplies its own nutrients to the soil, which replenishes its fertility, and needs no toxic chemicals, pesticides or insecticides in order to grow, making hemp the frontrunner for the most sustainable and economical potential. Hemp consumes four times as much CO2 as trees do, effectively fighting global warming. Afends now feature an entire Hemp collection.

Afends stores use absolutely no single use plastic or paper wastage, with recyclable brown paper bags used at checkout and digital receipts getting emailed to customers. Since 2016, the Afends Clothing HQ, Cafe and Warehouse, also based in Byron Bay, has been running off solar power.

As of 2014, all Afends garments are packed in corn starch garment bags made from renewable and sustainable plant materials as well as non-toxic compostable resin making them 100% home compostable. Afends are continually innovating processes to use their waste and remnant fabric. This includes the introduction of scrunchies to their women’s range. The scrunchies are sustainably made using the fabric offcuts leftover. Afends is currently transitioning to using recycled card for all product swing tags aiming for 100% recycled card swing tags by 2021.

By partnering with organisations charities such as Take 3 for the Sea and Sea Shepherd, Afends have been able to spread awareness to over 2 million people globally, have donated thousands of proceeds by clothing collaborations and fundraising, and contributed to educating over 300,000 people worldwide.
