About

In 1906, an English inventor in Boston, Massachusetts, set out to improve footwear performance for those on their feet all day. William J. Riley was inspired by the perfect balance exhibited by chickens in his yard. His first product, a flexible arch support, was designed with three points of support in the shape of a triangle. By mimicking a chicken’s clawed foot, these three points created greater balance and comfort. With this invention, a new company, New Balance Arch, was born.

New Balance products are the perfect blend of function and fashion, giving you the performance technology you need and the style you want. Our associates around the world bring these goals to life with their high-level skills and creativity.

Sustainability Efforts

Environmental Initiatives:

New Balance is constantly on the hunt for sustainable materials. By 2025, all their cotton and leather will be from preferred sources and 50% of their polyester will be recycled. Any organic cotton currently used is certified according to the Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS). By 2025, it is aimed that all leather used is either sourced from LWG Gold-rated tanneries or chrome-free leather. They are also investigating and prototyping sustainable leather alternatives.

New Balance is moving towards a low carbon future by reducing energy consumption in their facilities and throughout their global supply chain. By the end of 2017, their footwear suppliers collectively reduced their energy use by 21.5% per pair of shoes.

Many new balance stores take back gently worn shoes, donating usable items to local organisations. New Balance has joined RE100 and has signed the UN Fashion industry Charter for Climate Action. They have committed to sourcing 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2025 across all global New Balance operations.

Humanitarian Initiatives:

New Balance expects suppliers to maintain the highest standards of workplace health and safety based on the US Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), with an audit that assesses more than 60 different measures.

New Balance seeks to invest in programs that benefit movements such as health and education.

P.A.C.E Program: In 2019 New Balance launched the P.A.C.E program at two supplier footwear factories in Vietnam, employing more than 15,000 women. It supports the Gap Inc.’s commitment to help transform the lives of one million women and girls.

Additionally, New Balance completed implementation of the HER Health Program. Participating workers showed improved knowledge on nutrition, reproductive health, maternal care and. The importance of ergonomics in the workplace. By 2025, 100% of the women in New Balance footwear factories will benefit from education and skills courses.
