About

A pioneer in sustainable Fair Trade fashion, People Tree started in 1991. The core mission has stayed the same over the past three decades since award-winning social entrepreneur Safia Minney founded the company. Every product is made to the highest ethical and environmental standards from start to finish.

Sustainability Efforts

People Tree launched their first fashion range to meet the Global Organic Textile Standard certified by the Soil Association and were the first fashion company to be awarded the World Fair Trade Organisation product label.

By using skills such as hand weaving, hand knitting or hand embroidery People Tree create employment in rural areas where work is often scarce. All clothes are dyed using low impact dyes, free from harmful azo chemicals which are frequently used in clothing manufacture. People Tree use natural materials where possible, avoiding plastic and toxic substances.

93% of People Tree cotton in 2018 was Global Organic Textile Standard Certified Cotton (GOTS). This is organic cotton that is traceable from the seed to the finished product. People Tree’s main organic cotton supplier is Chetna Organic, who grow their cotton in three rain fed states in India. If the rainfall is insufficient or delayed, the farmers have developed soil & rain water conservation programs such as digging farm ponds and rock filled dams. These conservation programmes help to not only stop top soil erosion, but also help in locally harvesting the rain water to ensure critical irrigation if required.

People Tree use Lenzing certified TENCEL™, a sustainable fibre which transforms wood pulp into cellulosic fibres with high resource efficiency and low environmental impact. This solvent-spinning process recycles water and reuses the solvent at a recovery rate of more than 99%. TENCEL ™ fibre is biodegradable and compostable. All People Tree denim is made from organic cotton.

People Tree has teamed up with Sarp Jeans, who have transformed their laundry and finishing processes by collaborating with Jeanologia in order to reduce water and energy consumption, and to eliminate damaging emissions and waste, guaranteeing ZERO contamination. SARP producers have been audited by FWF (Fair Wear Foundation). Employees are trained about the environment, and efforts are made to protect both water and energy. In addition to this, they run a tree planting project in the arid regions of Turkey, and so far have planted 1000 trees.

The People Tree Foundation is an independent charity, working alongside People Tree the Fair Trade Company. The Foundation will bring benefits to an even greater number of farmers and artisans through scaling up training, technical support and environmental initiatives and through raising awareness and campaigning for fair and sustainable fashion.
