My Buying Guide on ‘Iron On To Fabric’

As someone who loves to personalize and customize my clothes, I have tried various methods of transferring designs onto fabric. From screen printing to embroidery, I have experimented with different techniques. However, one method that has always been my go-to for its convenience and ease is ironing on designs to fabric. If you are also interested in trying out this technique, here is my buying guide on ‘Iron On To Fabric’ that will help you get started.

1. Choose the Right Iron-On Transfer Paper

The first step in ironing on designs to fabric is selecting the right transfer paper. Transfer paper is a special type of paper coated with a heat-activated adhesive on one side. This adhesive side is placed facing down onto the fabric and then ironed on to transfer the design onto the fabric.

When choosing transfer paper, make sure to check if it is compatible with your printer type (inkjet or laser) and the fabric you will be using it on (cotton, polyester, etc.). Some transfer papers are designed specifically for light-colored fabrics while others work better on dark-colored fabrics.

2. Consider the Fabric Type

The type of fabric you will be ironing on the design also plays a crucial role in the success of your project. Generally, cotton or cotton-blend fabrics work best for iron-on transfers as they can withstand high heat without getting damaged. However, if you are using a delicate or synthetic fabric, make sure to use a lower heat setting and test it out on a small area first.

3. Prepare Your Design

Before printing your design onto the transfer paper, make sure it is mirrored or flipped horizontally so that when transferred onto the fabric it will appear correctly. Also, remember to print your design onto the uncoated side of the transfer paper.

4. Take Proper Precautions while Ironing

In order to get a crisp and long-lasting transfer, it is important to take proper precautions while ironing on the design. Set your iron at its hottest setting without steam and preheat your iron for at least 5 minutes before starting. Place a pillowcase or thin cloth over your design before ironing as this will prevent any direct contact between the hot iron and transfer paper which can cause smudging.

5. Let It Cool Down Before Peeling Off

Once done with ironing, let your design cool down completely before peeling off the backing paper from one corner slowly and gently in one smooth motion. If any part of your design doesn’t stick properly or has wrinkles, place back down and repeat step 4 until satisfied.

6.Use A Heat Press for Larger Designs

If you plan on creating larger designs or working with bulk orders, investing in a heat press machine may be worth considering as it ensures even heat distribution and pressure for better results.

I hope this buying guide helps you successfully create beautiful custom designs using ‘Iron On To Fabric’ technique like I do! Happy crafting!
